Student Spotlight: Leyla

"I've loved cosmetology since I was three years old, painting my dad's nails. When I heard about the program, I knew it was what I wanted to do!"

Now, Leyla is turning that passion into real-world skills. Through hands-on instruction, she's learning about hair types, textures, density, and porosity, along with techniques for each. From roller sets and pin curls to heat styling, braiding, extensions, and chemical services, she's discovering there's much more to cosmetology than she imagined!  With guidance from her instructor, Leyla is building the skills, experience, and confidence needed to prepare for her future Arizona State Board licensing examinations.

Next year brings an exciting opportunity! Second-year students will begin offering select salon services to the public under instructor supervision. It's a chance for community members to support aspiring cosmetologists while students gain valuable experience working with real clients.  Leyla is especially excited about this next step. As she explains, practicing on mannequins is one thing, but working with people requires a whole new level of care, communication, and technique.

For Leyla, the program is also a stepping stone toward college. She hopes to use her cosmetology skills to earn money and help pay for her education.  Her ultimate dream? To open an inclusive salon welcoming all hair types, skin types, and personal styles, while providing opportunities for other beauty professionals to grow their own businesses.

"I want to give other people the same opportunity I've been given."

Through MICTED, Leyla isn't just learning a trade. She's building the foundation for a future as an entrepreneur!
