Student Spotlight: Angelica

Her goal is to become a wildland firefighter and serve on an engine crew. She plans to begin her journey by joining the military, then transition into a fire department career after her service. Her passion for the field was sparked by the show Fire Country on Paramount and fully ignited after watching Only the Brave—shown by one of her Fire Science instructors and firefighter, Chris Acosta.

Originally from Southern California (but born in Phoenix), she hopes to move back there to pursue her firefighting career, believing the region offers strong opportunities in the field and a chance to reconnect with her roots. While she loves Arizona, she’s always felt drawn to larger cities and the challenges they bring.

So far this semester, her favorite part of the program has been wildland training. While fire prevention focuses more on structural concepts, wildland days are hands-on- working with ladders, gear, and timed drills. As a hands-on learner, this is where she truly thrives.

At her core, she’s motivated by a desire to help people. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a doctor, and she now sees firefighting as another powerful way to serve and save lives. She’s especially excited to work as part of a crew, build connections, and learn from fellow firefighters and chiefs along the way.

She lives by advice that her adopted mom- who she is very close with- shared with her years ago:
“In the end, you should always do the right thing, even when it’s hard.”

That message continues to guide her as she pushes forward, one step at a time, toward a future of service, strength, and purpose.
