Instructor Spotlight: Kirk

What started as an unexpected career path turned into a lifelong calling. He began line working professionally in the mid-1980s, completing his apprenticeship in 1989, and has since worked across 18 states- from snow-packed storm zones to major power restoration efforts. One of the most powerful moments of his career came during a massive winter storm in Seattle, when restoring power on Christmas Day brought entire neighborhoods to tears. For Kirk, flipping that switch and watching a valley light back up never gets old- it’s the reward that makes even the hardest conditions worth it.

Kirk joined Mountain Institute in 2022, bringing decades of real-world experience and a deep passion for teaching. A lifelong instructor (and former taekwondo teacher), his favorite part of the job is watching students succeed long after graduation- many staying in touch as they move through apprenticeships across the country. He’s currently working toward his master’s in education and strengthening the program, so students leave with apprenticeship coursework already completed. Kirk believes CTE is powerful because students don’t have to guess their future—they choose it. As he says, education helps you get ahead, but loving what you do is just as important. And when it comes to linework? “It’s the best job ever- and sometimes the worst, but the rewards are unbelievable.”
